The name of Albugnano which latin origins you can tell from the suffix "anum " can , according to the studies of D. Olivieri in his dictionnary of Piedmont roots, almost surely be connected to a roman who lived there.Less credible theories like those of Matta and Bosio make the name stem from "albus ",because of the whiteness of the soil , or from "alb "meaning "height " The origins of the village are obscur. It probably was an ancient Ligure colony, where rich nobles from Augusta Taurinum or Industria ( Monteu da Po ) had settled under the roman empire.Later, it was invaded by the Lombards, who built a castle that underwent many changes under the Monferrato Marquis to be finally destroyed by the French at the beginning of the 15th century. Until 1861, on the square of "Belvedere Matta " stood a tower, the only remain of the old manor. The story of Albugnano is quite complicated too: it first belonged to Vercelli, then to the Brozolo, to the city of Asti ,to the Monferrato Marquisate ,and in the end to the Savoia family, who shared it among their vassals , Benso, Ponticelli, Gaultieri, Serra.
